u.z.e.: Nicht erkennen?
Vielleicht: Inhaltsverlust, Unschärfe, Verschwinden, Leere. >> Matten Vogel stellt mit seinen aktuellen Arbeiten offenbar Fragen nach der Möglichkeit von Erkenntnis. Was zunächst kaum ungewöhnlich wäre ... doch hier bedarf es eines genaueren Blicks, denn der Künstler scheint eine eigene Qualität im Umgang mit dieser für ihn gerade auch ästhetisch motivierten Fragestellung zu generieren.
Vogels Arbeiten gelingt eine erstaunliche Balance zwischen Offenheit und klarer Verdichtung einer Idee. Zunächst offen in Bezug auf mögliche Weisen der Erkenntnis oder besser Nicht-Erkenntnis und dann aber eben auch klar verdichtet in der Aufforderung die Möglichkeit von Erkenntnis ästhetisch zu thematisieren. Denn natürlich will der Betrachter erkennen und genau dieser Wille wird von Matten Vogel subtil und dann vor allem produktiv gebrochen – wer möchte, kann vorschnell durchaus eine Art negative Rasterfahndung assoziieren. Erkenntnis scheint nicht möglich und vom Künstler auch nicht gewollt.
Doch so einfach ist es nicht. Denn u.z.e. forciert mittels Intensität und Insistieren eine Art erkenntnistheoretischen Dreischritt: Der Wille zur Erkenntnis („Ich will wissen“), die Unmöglichkeit zu Erkennen („Kein Inhalt.“) und eine Flimmern oder Blurring von Erkenntnis („Nicht-Erkenntnis / Erkenntnis?“). Es passiert etwas. Durch Fragestellung und ästhetische Umsetzung wird der Betrachter auf etwas hingewiesen: Das Verschwinden von Erkenntnis kann ein produktiver Widerspruch sein, der zu einer Struktur des Flimmerns führt.
Insgesamt bringt Matten Vogel die Erkenntnis scheinbar zum Verschwinden, nur um sie gleichzeitig anders einzufordern; oder um den Betrachter aufzufordern: Sich zusammen mit dem Künstler an möglichen Formen des Nicht-Erkennens abzuarbeiten ohne eine strukturelle Präsenz von Erkenntnis – ob verdeckt, negiert oder „dahinter“ – aus den Augen verlieren zu können. u.z.e.: Non-awareness?
Perhaps: loss of content, fuzziness, disappearance, emptiness. >> In his current works, Matten Vogel raises questions concerning the possibility of awareness. Which at first glance might not seem so unusual … Yet in this case, a closer look becomes necessary, as the artist appears to be generating a rather distinct quality when approaching this line of questioning, which for him is aesthetically motivated above all else.
Vogel’s works achieve an astonishing balance between openness and the clear consolidation of an idea. Initially open in relation to the possible modes of awareness or rather non-awareness, but then also clearly consolidated in the invitation to aesthetically address the possibility of awareness. Because of course the viewer wants to become aware and it is precisely this will that Matten Vogel subtly and then most importantly productively breaks – those who wish to do so may jump to the conclusion that this evokes a negative dragnet investigation of sorts. It seems impossible to be aware of what is going on, and that the artist does not want that, either.
Yet it is not that simple. For u.z.e. uses intensity and insistency to force a kind of epistemological triad: The will to become aware (“I want to know”), the impossibility of becoming aware (“no content”), and a flickering or blurring of awareness (“non-awareness / awareness?”). Something happens. By following a line of questioning and aesthetic implementation, the viewer is pointed towards something: The disappearance of awareness can be a productive contradiction that leads to a structure of flickering.
different way, or to invite the viewer to work through possible forms of non-awareness together with the artist, without losing sight of a structural presence of awareness – be it concealed, negated or “behind”. Blurring: awareness.
